Role of particle rotation in sheared granular media

چکیده

Abstract When granular assemblies are subject to external loads or displacements, particles interact with each other through contact and may exhibit translations rotations. From a micromechanical perspective, particle rotations an essential mechanism influencing the macroscopic behavior of materials. In this study, biaxial shearing tests were conducted on dual-sized circular at different confining pressures. A high-precision image analysis method was developed extract particle-level motion all particles, including rotational behavior. Experimental results showed that most exhibited Particles within shear band more significant characterized by low connectivity (number contacts per particle). contrast, outside rotated lesser, only in beginning stage shearing. Every rotation either direction is accompanied opposite almost same magnitude neighboring region, clusters have been observed. Rotations both directions normally distributed assembly, average zero. The evolve symmetrically major principal strain. Generally, rate (degrees incremental strain) observed be maximum start shearing, gradually it becomes constant toward end value absolute cumulative for whole 18.6° i.e., 20% deviatoric Smaller size tend 67% higher than bigger particles. Influence of particle shape on sheared dense granular media

We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations of periodic shear cells, the influence of particle shape on the global mechanical behavior of dense granular media. Results at macro-mechanical level show that for large shear deformation samples with elongated particles, independent of their initial orientation, reach the same stationary value for both shear force and void ratio. At the micro...

Avalanches in anisotropic sheared granular media

We study the influence of particle shape anisotropy on the occurrence of avalanches in sheared granular media. We use molecular dynamic simulations to calculate the relative movement of two tectonic plates. Our model considers irregular polygonal particles constituting the material within the shear zone. We find that the magnitude of the avalanches is approximately independent of particle shape...

Liquid migration in sheared unsaturated granular media

We show how liquid migrates in sheared unsaturated granular media using a grain scale model for capillary bridges. Liquid is redistributed to neighboring contacts after rupture of individual capillary bridges leading to redistribution of liquid on large scales. The liquid profile evolution coincides with a recently developed continuum description for liquid migration in shear bands. The velocit...

Particle dynamics in sheared granular matter

The particle dynamics and shear forces of granular matter in a Couette geometry are determined experimentally. The normalized tangential velocity V(y) declines strongly with distance y from the moving wall, independent of the shear rate and of the shear dynamics. Local rms velocity fluctuations deltaV(y) scale with the local velocity gradient to the power 0.4+/-0.05. These results agree with a ...
